Malaysia sees 32.2mil tourist arrivals from Jan-Sept

Tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing says this is 2.4% higher than the figure recorded in the same period last year.

Tourism growth contributed 15.9% to the national gross domestic product.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysia recorded 32.2 million international visitor arrivals from January to September this year, tourism, arts and culture minister Tiong King Sing told the Dewan Rakyat today.

Tiong said these figures are 2.4% higher than what was recorded in the same period last year. He also said the tourism sector generated RM323 billion, contributing 15.9% to the national gross domestic product.

In order to maintain this momentum, Tiong said the government had allocated RM935 million to the tourism, arts and culture ministry, including for the Visit Malaysia campaign from 2026 to 2027.

“As the Supply Bill 2027 is still being debated, the allocation planning (for this ministry) is subject to the finance ministry’s final decision,” he said when winding up the 2027 budget debate for his ministry.

“Although the West Asia conflict affects tourists’ travelling plans, the government continues to enhance tourism promotion using existing allocations.”

Tiong also said his ministry, through the Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), would continue attracting international events to Malaysia.

The minister revealed that in the second quarter of this year, the number of international events increased by 81.2% to 125, while the number of international delegates increased by 105.2% to 83,596 people.

Meanwhile, the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (Mice) sector increased by 113.7% to RM1.24 billion.

To support this growth, RM10 million has been allocated to MyCEB to attract more Mice events and high-impact international sports tournaments to Malaysia, said the minister.

Regarding international flights, Tiong shared that Tourism Malaysia had collaborated with 24 airlines – three domestic and 21 international – to support 46 international routes, of which 35 were new and 11 were existing. Among the new international routes cited were Shanghai-Tawau, Shanghai-Penang, Xiamen-Kota Kinabalu and Frankfurt-Kuala Lumpur. - FMT
