KUALA LUMPUR – Barisan Nasional leaders have panned Pakatan Harapan’s decision in naming Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its prime minister candidate.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan strongly opposed the move, calling it a tragedy and a disservice to Pakatan Harapan’s reform agenda.

“Finally, Pakatan Harapan chose someone they called the most corrupted man in Malaysia as their PM. What a shame,” he said on his Twitter account.

“The funny thing is that Pakatan announced Dr Mahathir as PM and, at the same time, announced a slew of proposed reforms as their agenda.

“The truth is Dr Mahathir won’t implement those reforms,” he said, calling Dr Mahathir a master of deceit and a useless reformer.

Meanwhile, MCA publicity spokesman Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker said Pakatan Harapan should allow fresh faces to lead the pact into the general election.

He also said the country’s future should not lie in the hands of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Dr Mahathir alone.

“As a result of a similar personal agenda between the two, the nation was made to suffer for over 20 years. Please, don’t let it happen again. We have suffered enough,” he said.

He also said Dr Mahathir’s appointment as prime minister would be a “great injustice” to the nation.

“I believe both Anwar and Dr Mahathir carry too much political baggage and have a long history together, which could influence their decisions about the country’s future.

“They must come clean and stop misleading the nation if they have any intention of taking over (the government).”

Pakatan Harapan today named Dr Mahathir as its candidate for prime minister, in the event the opposition pact wins the 14th General Election.

Pakatan would, as soon as it forms the federal government, initiate legal action to secure a royal pardon for Anwar, who is serving a five-year jail term for sodomy.

Dr Mahathir, as such, would only hold the post temporarily to enable Anwar to become PM.
