KUALA LUMPUR: Being barred from seeing Anwar came as a rude shock to Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar.
Anwar’s daughter who is PKR vice-president said she felt bad for the former prime minister who was turned away by the authorities.
“Tun Mahathir was barred from seeing Anwar by the Sungai Buloh prison officials and director (Abd Kadir Rais).
“I believe Tun had kind intentions in wanting to see Anwar and he was quite crestfallen as we were surrounded by 30 prison officials.
“It was quite dramatic and unnecessary,” she said when met outside the Cheras Rehabilitation Centre.
She said Mahathir had not sent in a request to meet Anwar as visitors before him also hadn’t.
“When Nazri Aziz visited him, he didn’t get approval either; he was just allowed in.
“So why should this be any different?
Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Aziz had visited Anwar at Hospital Kuala Lumpur on Nov 26, 2017.
Mahathir’s visit was a social one and it was not political, said Nurul.
“I had informed the ministry about this visit and they had rejected it but we decided to try our luck anyway as Tun was so expecting to see Anwar.
“I tried to convince them to allow us in for the visit.”
Mahathir had wanted to see Anwar for a long time and expressed his desire to do so days after his shoulder surgery was completed in November last year, said Nurul.
“To be fair, he has been asking to see Anwar for weeks now but at that time, Mahathir was ill. Later, he had to participate in the nationwide PH activities.”
