Warisan raps MACC for giving impression veep on the run

Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) vice-president Junz Wong has accused the MACC of politicising its investigation into the purchase of an oil palm plantation worth about RM155 million in the Tongod district.
Wong was referring to the MACC's 48-hour deadline to another Warisan vice-president Peter Anthony and lawyer Michael Persius Ubu to turn themselves in, which was reported in the media, in order to facilitate the probe.
The Likas assemblyperson said the MACC should have contacted Anthony first before highlighting the matter in the media.
According to Wong (photo), Anthony is still in Sabah and is resting in Keningau, some 100km from Kota Kinabalu.

“Even if the MACC could not locate him, they could have contacted his lawyer but they didn't. Instead, they sought him through the media and everyone thinks he is on the run.
“By making a big stunt (out of the issue), the MACC is politicising the matter and attempting to discredit Anthony and the party,” he told Malaysiakini today.
Wong said Anthony would report to the Sabah MACC headquarters in Kota Kinabalu tomorrow afternoon.
He also pointed out that Anthony was acting in accordance with his bail condition, which stipulates that he reports to the MACC once every two months.
“His last reporting date was Nov 27, 2017. This means his next date is Jan 27, 2018. There is no issue if he does not report in between those two dates,” he added.
The MACC had arrested Anthony last October after it found that he was a recipient of projects from the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, which was previously helmed by Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He had denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the contracts were based on proper procedure.
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had dropped Shafie, who was also an Umno vice-president, from the cabinet in 2015 due to the latter's critical views on the 1MDB scandal.
He subsequently quit Umno to form the Sabah-based opposition party Warisan.- Mkini
