KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry in mulling amendments to the Road Transport Act to make it easier to auction off seized vehicles.
This is because some 9,000 seized vehicles with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) have yet to be released or auctioned off.
This was revealed on Monday (August 6) in the Auditor-General's Report 2017 which said that the JPJ had also formed a task force to look into the matter.
"As of November 2017, there are 9,704 number of vehicles kept in JPJ compounds nationwide. The vehicles represent those which had been seized over the years but have yet to be released or auctioned off," the report stated.
.Among the delays in disposing of the vehicles include weaknesses in issuing notice of seizure and poor record keeping of the vehicles.
Auditors also found that out of the 5,436 vehicles seized in five states between 2015 and 2016, a total of 1,525 were cloned vehicles without proper ownership documentation.
The Auditor-General also noted that a majority of JPJ enforcement officers failed to use the 62 handheld devices worth RM554,640 for the purpose of issuing electronic notice of seizure while on operations.
Instead, 93.7% of the notices were done manually in five states.- Star
