NEW DELHI: Malaysians have been advised to avoid travelling to the southern Indian state of Kerala where more than 300 people have died due to heavy rains and flooding.
The consulate-general of Malaysia in Chennai said it is “closely monitoring the situation and wishes to advise all Malaysians in Kerala to exercise vigilance and take all necessary precautions”.
“Malaysians who are planning to travel to Kerala are also advised to defer non-essential trips until the weather condition improves,” it said in an advisory on Friday.
Cochin International Airport, a major transport hub, has suspended its operations until Aug 26.
At present, rail and road transport have been disrupted and people stranded in flooded areas are desperate for food and essential goods.
Many regions of Kerala are hit by heavy rains, with dozens of deaths being reported in the Thrissur, Idukki and Malappuram districts.
More than 300,000 people have been moved to relief camps and hundreds of thousands of others need urgent rescue from the flooded areas.
Elsewhere in south India, a flood warning has been issued by local authorities in the Theni and Madurai districts of Tamil Nadu and people living near the banks of the Cauvery and Bhavani rivers have been asked to relocate to safer places.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced an immediate financial assistance of five billion rupees (around RM308 million) for the flood-ravaged state.
This is in addition to the US$15 million (RM61 million) announced by the central government a few days ago.
Modi announced the financial relief after conducting an aerial survey of the state, where according to official sources, 324 people have died.
Modi also announced an ex-gratia relief of 200,000 rupees (around RM11,730) per person who died in the floods, and 50,000 rupees to each person injured, from the PM’s National Relief Fund. -FMT
