Bersatu set to accept 30,000 members from Sarawak

About 30,000 Sarawakians have shown interest in joining Bersatu, said the party chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Mahathir said the party will accept them as members and they are planning to open up branches in the Borneoan state.

"Many people in Sarawak are interested to join Bersatu, about 30,000 them … we will accept their request to become members and there will be a selection for division leaders," he said in a press conference after the Bersatu Meeting at the party's office at Petaling Jaya today.

On Monday, Stampin Bersatu pro-tem chairman Johan Mohamad said 22 divisions had their meetings and formed their own pro-tem committees and hoped to achieve 31 divisions in Sarawak.

Johan said that he, along with the pro-tem chairman for Petra Jaya Affendi Jeman, and Sharif Busrah who is the Sarawak PPBM founder, have been given until next week to send the list of divisions and pro-tem committee members to the party headquarters.

Meanwhile, Mahathir said Bersatu president and Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's may have to undergo chemotherapy.

"I visited him... he is well. This kind of disease... the treatment period is very long... he will have to do some follow-up and maybe (he will undergo) chemotherapy," he said.

Last month, Muhyiddin had undergone surgery to remove a growth on his pancreas and Mahathir has temporarily taken charge of the Home Ministry.

In a statement, Muhyiddin's press secretary Hafiz Abdul Salim said the growth was detected while it was still in the early stages. -Mkini
