FOR NOW ZAHID BREATHES AGAIN: BUT ONCE THERE’S EVIDENCE OF RM230 MILLION CORRUPTION, MACC WILL ACT – LAW MINISTER

There is no evidence that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had RM230 million in assets, said Law Minister Liew Vui Keong.

In a parliamentary written reply, Liew said the MACC would investigate the matter should any evidence be adduced.

He was replying to Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh who asked if the government will investigate the allegation.

Allegations on Zahid’s extraordinary wealth surfaced in August last year when he was involved in a public spat with Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Zahid had publicly accused Mahathir of having Indian roots and offered an old version of the latter’s identity card as evidence.

Mahathir shot back by accusing Zahid of making an asset declaration in 1996 which amounted to nine figures.

At the time, Mahathir was Umno president and Zahid was the Youth chief.

Following this, Zahid accused Mahathir of lying and welcomed investigations by the MACC.

Zahid said that at the material time, he was a businessperson, the chief executive officer of a public-listed company and chairperson of Bank Simpanan Nasional.

He also urged the authorities to investigate Mahathir’s children over their source of wealth.
