Karpal's daughter files report over 'interference' in sedition appeal

Sangeet Kaur Deo, the daughter of late DAP stalwart Karpal Singh, has filed a police report over claims that a senior judge interfered with the outcome of her father's sedition appeal in 2016.
This followed media reports about claims made by lawyer Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla that an unnamed judge reportedly meddled in the majority decision to allow Karpal's appeal and acquit him of the charge.
Haniff had alleged in a Facebook post on Tuesday that the panel had been asked to reverse the ruling.
He said he had only been informed about the alleged meddling recently.
"This is a very serious allegation and must be investigated. If necessary an RCI should also be set up to investigate the alleged interference within the judiciary," Sangeet told Malaysiakini.
Karpal was charged with uttering seditious words against the Sultan of Perak at his legal firm in Jalan Pudu Lama in Kuala Lumpur, between noon and 12.30pm on Feb 6, 2009.
He was alleged to have said that the removal of Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as mentri besar by the sultan could be questioned in a court of law.
On June 11, 2010, the High Court acquitted Karpal without calling for his defence.
However, the Court of Appeal reversed the decision on Jan 20, 2012, and ordered him to enter his defence.
Following that, the High Court on Feb 21, 2014, found the senior lawyer guilty of sedition.
Karpal died in a road accident on April 17, 2014.
On May 30, 2016, the Court of Appeal upheld his conviction but reduced his fine from RM4,000 to RM1,800.
The then 10-month old Perak Pakatan Rakyat government crumbled in February 2009 when five of its assemblypersons threw their support behind BN which had 28 representatives.
Pangkor assemblyperson Zambry Abdul Kadir was then appointed as mentri besar. - Mkini
