Kian Ming: Does MCA want to abolish bumiputera rights?

BALAKONG POLLS | Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Ong Kian Ming today questioned whether MCA was of the opinion that the government should abolish the bumiputera rights when they urged Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng to stop the "congress of bumiputera".
He said this in response to MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun, who urged the DAP secretary-general to put a stop to the 2018 Congress on the Future of Bumiputeras & the Nation (KBN 2018), instead of playing the race card.
“In our manifesto, we neither promised that we won’t hold this kind of congress, nor promised to abolish bumiputera’s economic policy,” Ong told Malaysiakini at the campaign trail for the Balakong by-election.
“I don’t get why MCA is inciting on this. Do they think that the government should abolish their rights? Does MCA want to abolish bumiputera rights?"
He challenged the MCA leader to clarify the party’s stand.
Ong stressed that it would hard for the country to achieve a developed nation status if the economic status of the bumiputera does not improve.
Meanwhile, DAP candidate Wong Siew Ki described MCA candidate Tan Chee Teong as a “free rider” as the Selangor government was already doing what her opponent has urged them to do.
“The points in his manifesto were all about ‘urge on’ the current government to implement the policies, but, in fact, the Selangor government has been doing it."
Instead, Wong said, Tan should reveal MCA's political achievements.
"Did MCA voice out to criticise the previous government when all the corruption cases happened? If not, then why the people should believe that you will be a good opposition in the assembly?”
Wong stressed that the four components parties in Pakatan Harapan are playing their part on check and balance.
She quipped that the two deputy ministers standing behind her - Ong and Steven Sim - have some experience of being “shot” by other leaders in Harapan.
“When we say or do something inappropriate, the leaders of other components party will criticise us too.”
Wong also reminded MCA that they can still perform their role on check-and-balance without being in the state assembly. - Mkini
