Liow: MCA’s move to ditch the dacing in Balakong a unilateral decision

MCA’s decision to drop the BN logo in favour of its own in the Balakong by-election was a unilateral decision by the party.
Party president Liow Tiong Lai said he has yet to inform BN component parties Umno and MIC of the decision.
“We will inform the component parties of our decision so they will be able to give us their support,” he said during a press conference after launching MCA’s operations room in Balakong today.
Pressed if he had communicated the decision prior to making yesterday’s announcement, he said, “Not yet.”
Liow said the use of MCA’s own logo was part of the party’s reforms following BN’s thumping defeat in the 14th general election.
He denied the decision was made due to Umno’s loss in the recent Sungai Kandis by election, where the BN logo was used.
'MCA’s struggle known to all'
Asked if voters would recognise the MCA logo, not used in elections since 1959, Liow brushed off concerns saying the party was well-known for its past 69 years of service to Malaysians of all races.
“It won’t be a problem, people will know our logo from MCA’s struggle.
“Plus, it is Pakatan Harapan that is using a new logo (for the by-election),” he added.
Yesterday, Liow clarified MCA was not quitting BN, but would be focusing its efforts on reforming the party.
"Let me reiterate. BN is already 'ming cun shi wang' (exists in name only, but dead in reality)," he said.
The Sept 8 Balakong by-election was called following the death of DAP incumbent Eddie Ng in a car accident.
Nomination day is next Sat (Aug 18), and neither MCA nor DAP have announced their candidates for the seat. -Mkini
