MACC probes offices, Sabah Forestry Department for corruption

MACC confirms raids at several locations in Sabah yesterday, says it also seized documents from the home of a senior Forestry Department officer in Sandakan.
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today confirmed that it had raided several locations in Sabah yesterday to obtain documents related to its investigation into alleged corruption linked to the Sabah Forestry Department.
Sources said 40 officers conducted raids around Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau and Tambunan, and seized documents from the home of a senior Forestry Department officer.
“The documents that were taken from the suspects’ houses and offices were related to the Forestry Department and financial reports from companies that received projects from the department,” an MACC source said.
MACC deputy commissioner Azam Baki confirmed the raids, saying the anti-graft authority was investigating the case under Section 4 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act.
He added that several senior officers were under investigation.
Earlier this month, MACC raided SFD’s offices in Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan.
The commission was looking for certain licensing documents, having already conducted raids on three timber offices belonging to well-connected individuals in Tawau and Sandakan.
They also seized documents from the timber companies, but it was unclear whether documents were taken from the Forestry Department headquarters.
The state’s Conservator of Forests, Sam Mannan, has reportedly been given three months’ notice of termination of employment. -FMT
