FORMER Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin today called on wanted businessman Low Taek Jho to stop hiding if he is innocent.
The Rembau MP said the businessman, better known as Jho Low, who is implicated in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal, must return to Malaysia and face the authorities.
Khairy also said that Umno would not be able to move forward as long as Low remained on the run, and cases relating to SRC International remained pending.
“Come back to Malaysia and face the authorities. If you are innocent, stop hiding,” Khairy said in his Twitter today.
“For as long as you are on the run and the other related court cases (SRC) remain pending, my party cannot move beyond the 1MDB issue and rebuild,” he said.
In his tweet, Khairy also referred to a news story in which Low had said that the Pakatan Harapan government was lying about its “illegal” seizure of superyacht Equanimity.
In the report, a spokesman for Low, through the Penang-born financier’s lawyers, said Putrajaya’s action made it impossible to sell the vessel at a fair price, due to still-open legal questions and repercussions for any new owner.
The spokesman said repeated misstatements by Malaysia were embarrassing the United States, which has said it was not involved in the seizure, and will update the US courts on August 17.
The RM1 billion yacht was allegedly bought using 1Malaysia Development Bhd funds, which belonged to Malaysian taxpayers, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad earlier this week, following an agreement reached for Indonesia to hand over the Equanimity to Malaysia.
Earlier today, Dr Mahathir said his government was now aiming to bring back Low’s private jet seized last year by Singaporean authorities and currently being kept at Singapore’s Seletar Airport.
