Prosecutors drop appeal against Rafizi for ‘Umno insult’

Prosecutors today withdrew their appeal against a High Court decision that overturned PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli’s conviction for allegedly insulting Umno members.
In January 2016, the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court found Rafizi guilty of violating Section 504 of the Penal Code (on criminal defamation) and fined him RM1,800 for his remarks published in the defunct fz.com publication.
A year later, he won his appeal in the High Court and the fine was refunded. Following this, prosecutors filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal.
The charge referred to an article titled “Analyst: Will Rafizi quit if Selangor is not toppled?” which appeared on fz.com in 2014.
In that article, Rafizi blamed Selangor Umno for a string of anti-Christian demonstrations and several acts of violence.
“These are things that don't happen on their own. It's planned and endorsed and being carried out by Selangor Umno," Rafizi alleged.
Between 2010 and 2014, several churches were vandalised and attacked with firebombs following a court verdict that non-Muslims had a legal right to use the word “Allah”.
At the time, then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak described the incidents as a “minor aberration” and did not reflect the sentiments of most Muslims in Malaysia. -Mkini
