People are free to challenge PKR president Anwar Ibrahim for his post, said former party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
“Anybody can challenge (the president). Because I remember even in Umno party last time [...] (someone) challenged Onn (Jaafar).
“It happens in any political party,” the deputy prime minister said when asked after paying a visit to a “Street Dakwah” demonstration outside the Petronas Twin Towers tonight.
Earlier today, a The Star columnist quoted internal sources and claimed that PKR deputy president Azmin Ali had told Anwar “I will go against you in many years to come”.
This had allegedly prompted Anwar to respond “I will take you on”.
This claim followed Azmin’s move to publicly criticise Anwar for appointing Azmin's defeated opponents into the PKR leadership.
"The appointments do not reflect the principle of fair and just representation of the party member's aspirations, and will not help to bring the party forward," he had said.
Azmin also said certain appointments did not appear to be made based on merit, giving special mention to the secretary-general post.
Saifuddin Nasution had aligned with Azmin's rival Rafizi Ramli in the PKR election which concluded in November 2018.
Saifuddin had also unsuccessfully challenged Azmin for the PKR deputy presidency in 2014.
In his statement, Azmin claimed some of the appointments do not appear to be made based on merit, and that some of the appointees were involved in problems related to the party elections.
Anwar later said he was trying to be inclusive and accused Azmin of being “personal” with regard to some of his rivals. - Mkini
