Anwar on the same page with Dr M on reform agenda

RANTAU POLLS | PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that he will continue the reforms started by Dr Mahathir Mohamad in combating corruption, abuse of power and deceit.
He said he was on the same page with the current prime minister on this and would continue to expose and haul perpetrators to court.
“People ask me what Pakatan Harapan’s greatest achievement under Mahathir is. I answer (that he) is still continuing with the reform agenda,” Anwar said during PKR’s 20th anniversary celebration in Pekan Rantau last night.
“There is no compromise on this (reforms against corruption, abuse of power and deceiving the rakyat). There are those who try to say this is the difference between Mahathir and I. There is absolutely no difference. There is rule of law in this country,” he added.
Speaking to a crowd of more than 2,000 party members and Rantau residents present, Anwar said that in building up the nation, its leaders must learn to shine once more.
He then proceeded to use the metaphor of metal and rust to explain his point.
“This group (of leaders) is akin to strong metal. However strong the metal may be, when thrown in the water of political waves, it will eventually begin to rust.
“That is why the metal that has been thrown into the water will surface from time to time and be polished with oil.
“Then it is returned to the fighting arena. When the oil disappears, it will rust once more, then shined again. No leader is exempted, even me,” the Port Dickson MP explained.
No leader, he elaborated further, must be spared from receiving criticism, to strengthen their minds and spirit.
During last night’s celebration, taking place in the midst of campaigning period for the Rantau state seat by-election, Anwar was joined, among others, by former PKR president and current Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun and national laureate A Samad Said.
Also present were several Harapan leaders, including DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, Negeri Sembilan Bersatu president Rais Yatim and Harapan’s candidate for the coming by-election, Dr S Streram.
The Rantau by-election will take place on April 13. - Mkini
