Anwar: Some trumpet Umno-PAS unity but quietly seek 'insurance' from me

RANTAU POLLS | PKR president Anwar Ibrahim today said there were certain leaders who were projecting a united front in the Umno-PAS opposition alliance but at the same time were trying to cut a deal with him behind the scenes.
Speaking on the campaign trail in Rantau, Anwar said the people should therefore not be influenced by what was being put out publicly when they actually have different plans.
"They think that they have to have a good relations with Anwar because Anwar will become the next prime minister.
"They want to buy 'insurance'. At the grassroots level, they talk about Umno and PAS roots but they quietly come seeking negotiations with me," he told voters at Kampung Sega Hilir in Rantau.
Earlier, Anwar said based on his reading, he also did not think that Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan (photo) will be able to officially take over as Umno president.
Anwar was campaigning for Pakatan Harapan's candidate Dr S Steram, who will be facing incumbent Mohamad in the Rantau by-election. Also in the race are independent candidates R Malar and Mohd Nor Yassin.
"People ask me, how (is Streram going to) fight an Umno deputy president who is now the acting Umno president - I do not think Mohamad will become president.
"That is my political understanding. I was in Umno for a long time and was also once the Umno deputy president and acting president," he said.
Anwar is Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's designated successor.
Mahathir had agreed to his position as interim prime minister as part of the condition for him to work with his former opponents in Harapan.
Rantau polling day takes place on April 13. - Mkini
