EC puts a stop to free car wash for Rantau voters

SEREMBAN: The Election Commission (EC) stepped in to stop a car wash operator offering free services to Rantau by-election voters on Saturday (April 6).
The shop is located close to the Pakatan Harapan main operational room in Bandar Ekar, Rantau, about 22km from here.
A now-removed banner over the shopfront, had the wording "Cuci kereta percuma khas untuk pengundi Rantau (free car wash for Rantau voters)" with a black-and-white Pakatan logo in a ballot box marked with an "X".
The free car wash service was offered from 3pm to 5pm daily from March 30 to April 12.
EC deputy chairman Azmi Sharom confirmed that the EC visited the shop on Saturday (April 6) and warned the workers that what they were doing was wrong.
Meanwhile, the car wash owner, known only known as Muthusamy, said they had yet to start the free service.
"We didn't even start the free service yet. The EC came to the shop yesterday (April 6) and warned us that it was wrong to do so, therefore we won't be starting the service at all.
"We complied with the EC and also took down the banner," he said.
Muthusamy said the car wash is a family-owned business and that he is not part of any political party.
The Star visited the car wash on April 4 to ask about the service and was told that it was free for voters but that they needed to register first.
The polling day for the Rantau by-election has been set for April 13, with early voting to be held on April 9.- Star
