The sale of superyacht Equanimity for US$126 million (RM515 million) is proof that the 1MDB scandal is real, said Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.
"They say the 1MDB scandal is fake. If 1MDB is fake, how did we sell the Equanimity?” asked Lim at a ceramah in Kuala Sawah, Rantau, last night.
"That is not a lie. Selling the Equanimity is proof that the 1MDB (scandal) really happened. The luxury handbags, the bags of cash, that is not a lie."
Fugitive businessperson Jho Low is believed to have bought the Equanimity in 2014 using US$250 million in funds allegedly diverted from the country’s sovereign fund 1MDB.
On Wednesday, attorney-general Tommy Thomas announced the superyacht had been sold to Genting Malaysia.
At a ceramah hours after the announcement, Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan, who is BN candidate for the Rantau by-election, lamented that the Pakatan Harapan government had failed to bring anyone to task over the 1MDB scandal.
He also questioned why the Harapan government had yet to solve the case 10 months after taking Putrajaya.
Lim said it would take time to recover all the funds allegedly siphoned from 1MDB due to the complexity of the case.
Mohamad is contesting against Streram Sinnasamy from PKR, and two independent candidates - Malar Rajaram and Mohd Nor Yassin at the Rantau by-election. Polling day is on April 13. - Mkini
