KUALA TERENGGANU: Kuala Terengganu MP Ahmad Amzad Hashim was injured when he fell off a wave breaker on the banks of Sungai Terengganu estuary near the Kuala Terengganu drawbridge.
Amzad was at the scene to check out six Vietnamese fishing boats, along with 64 crewmen, brought to the jetty at Pulau Kambing around 9.30am.
The boats were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for fishing in the state’s waters.
He was said to have lost his balance and fell.
Several officers from the Kuala Terengganu Parliamentary Office who were with Amzad rushed to his aid and helped him to regain consciousness.
Amzad said the incident occurred when he wanted to see for himself the difficulties faced by MMEA in bringing the vessels, including a large foreign fishing boat, into the estuary, as they could not pass through the drawbridge due to the high tide.
“While climbing a rock to get on the wave breaker and have a clearer view of the boats, I felt a sudden sharp pain in my toes and lost my balance,” he said.
“I suffered only light injuries on the face and hands, and was treated by my wife, Dr Nur Diana Ahmad Takri, when I returned home.
“I went back to the MMEA headquarters later to meet the officers and enforcement staff.”
