KUALA LUMPUR: Najib Razak’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, failed today in his attempt to obtain the letter of appointment of Gopal Sri Ram as senior deputy public prosecutor, and also to recuse Gopal, a former Federal Court judge, from leading the prosecution team in Najib’s trial on money laundering charges.
High Court judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah dismissed Muhammad Shafee’s applications after hearing submissions by lawyer Harvinderjit Singh, representing Muhammad Shafee, and the prosecution, represented by deputy public prosecutor Kamal Baharin Omar.
Sequerah said Muhammad Shafee’s application for the appointment letter was dismissed because the court was bound by the Federal Court’s decision not to allow the defence access to the letter of appointment of Sulaiman Abdullah as head of the prosecution team in the case against Najib involving SRC International funds.
Najib’s application for Sulaiman’s appointment letter was dismissed by the High Court, which was overturned on appeal to the Court of Appeal. However, the Federal Court upheld the High Court decision.

Muhammad Shafee, 66, was charged last September with receiving proceeds from unlawful activity via cheques issued by Najib. He allegedly received a cheque for RM4.3 million on Sept 13, 2013 and another for RM5.2 million on Feb 17, 2014
The cases have been transferred for hearing at the High Court. - FMT
