PAS to mobilise election machinery to help PBS notch victory in Sandakan

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.
KOTA KINABALU: PAS will mobilise its election machinery in an effort to help PBS candidate Linda Tsen win the Sandakan parliamentary by-election.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said this was in line with the party’s decision not to field a candidate for the seat yesterday.
He said the move was to strengthen the opposition bloc which will play a check-and-balance role in Parliament for the welfare and interest of the people.
“PAS, through Sabah and Sandakan PAS, will move the local election machinery, especially in ensuring members and supporters cast their votes on May 11 to help the PBS candidate,” he said in a statement today.
This is not the first time PAS has backed an opposition candidate, with the Islamist party working with Umno in the last three by-elections in Cameron Highlands, Semenyih and Rantau, which were all won by the Barisan Nasional.
Besides Tsen, the other candidates vying for the Sandakan seat are Pakatan Harapan’s Vivian Wong, who is from DAP, and three independents, Hamza Abdullah, Chia Siew Yung and Sulaiman Abdul Samat.
Sandakan has 39,777 registered voters – with ethnic Chinese comprising 49% of the constituents, Muslim Bumiputeras (44%) and non-Muslim Bumiputeras (6%). - FMT
