Penang State Legislative Assembly Speaker Law Choo Kiang has advised the state assemblypersons not to turn the assembly into Parliament or a local council.
By this, Law said, he meant that the state assembly is where state-related issues get presented and debated, and questions asked.
"Do not bring up parliamentary issues, including its politics, which do not relate to the state.
"Also, do not focus mainly on issues like drainage or rubbish, which are matters to raise at the local councils," Law (photo, above) told Malaysiakini after he held a press conference at Dewan Sri Pinang today.
"They must remember they are state lawmakers, not MPs or local councillors."
Law was asked about the quality of questions that have been submitted by the 40 assemblypersons for the state assembly proceedings, which will officially kick off on Monday, April 29.
Each state elected representative is allowed to ask 30 questions.
At the press conference today, Law said the second meeting of the first term of the 14th State Legislative Assembly will be held at the Dewan Sri Pinang, starting with its official ceremony at 9.30am tomorrow.
The ceremony will be officiated by Penang Governor Abdul Rahman Abbas.
Assembly premises closed for a year
The State Legislative Assembly building on Light Street is currently closed for renovations by the Public Works Department for a year and will be reopened next year.
"Renovation works for the assembly building have been awarded to Syarikat Fajar Eratimur Sdn Bhd via an open tender, which costs RM3,673,000," Law told reporters.
"The work started on March 13 and is expected to be completed by March 11, 2020," he added.
Accompanying Law at the press conference was state assembly secretary M Maheswari.
From 1995 to 1996, the state assembly was held at Universiti Sains Malaysia, while in 2005, the proceedings were held at the Dewan Sri Pinang due to renovation works.
The current renovation works include fixing a new ceiling, waterproofing the roofs, wall repairs, new flooring, windows and doors, mechanical and electrical works and landscaping inside the building. - Mkini
