PKR Youth communications chief Wong Chun Yuan today accused the Election Commission (EC) of practising double standard when it comes to election offences.
Wong (above), who allegedly breached election laws by treating voters in the Rantau by-election, was summoned to the Seremban district police headquarters this morning to assist in an investigation after EC lodged a report.
When contacted later, Wong told Malaysiakini that he was the only person being investigated under Section 8 of the Election Offences Act relating to the offence of treating.
“Police said they did not receive any other reports. The EC only lodged a report against me,” he added.
Wong reiterated that the dinner was a fundraising event and not to treat voters.
He claimed that MCA also organised free dinners during the by-election but no action was taken.
“All these activities were published on local papers, yet EC did not take any action,” Wong added.
According to Sin Chew Daily, MCA's Kuala Sawah branch organised a ceramah with free buffet dinner on April 3 to promote BN candidate Mohamad Hasan.
On April 6, Mohamad's supporters also organised a mega dinner attended by MCA president Wee Ka Siong and Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin.
However, Sin Chew Daily reported that Mohamad did not attend the dinner.
Wong added that he received the warning notice from an EC officer right after the Pakatan Harapan’s fundraising dinner on the eve of the by-election ended.
“The officer told me that they will lodge a report on the matter even if no complaints are made," he said.
Wong also revealed that Penang PKR Youth vice-chief Lee Boon Heng will be questioned by the police next.
PKR Youth lawyer Chiew Choon Man and PKR Rawang assemblyperson Chua Wei Kiat were present when Wong’s statement was recorded today. - Mkini
