Police helping Indonesia probe marked ballot papers

The police are assisting their Indonesian counterparts in investigations linked to the discovery of some 50,000 marked ballot papers for the country's upcoming general election.
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun clarified in a statement today that since the case involves no breach of Malaysian law, his officers have reached out to Indonesian authorities to determine the next course of action.
"In relation to the recent discovery of a number of documents allegedly linked to Indonesia's polls, police are investigating the case to determine actions that can be taken to assist Indonesian authorities.
"Therefore, the police have requested assistance from Indonesian police as the case does not involve any breach of Malaysian law," his statement read.
Last Thursday, Kuala Lumpur election monitoring committee chief Yaza Azzahra confirmed the discovery of the ballot papers at two locations in Bangi and Kajang.
According to Yaza, the ballot papers, found stuffed in over 200 bags, were mostly marked in favour of incumbent President Joko Widodo and his running mate Ma'aruf Amin, as well as for several candidates from parties in their coalition.
Selangor police chief Noor Azam Jamaludin subsequently confirmed that two police reports were lodged following the discovery.
This was followed by a police forensic unit collecting evidence from a rented room in Taman Kajang Utama, and a vacant shop lot unit in Sg Tangkas, Bangi.
Malaysiakini understands the investigation will, among others, look into the authenticity of the ballot papers, and how the documents meant for use in the early voting process ended up at the two sites.
Supporters of Widodo's presidential rival, retired general Prabowo Subianto, had alleged attempts of election fraud following the discovery.
Social media messages from Widodo's supporters, however, claimed the ballot papers were a setup to tarnish his reputation.
Early voting for Indonesia's presidential and legislative polls on April 17 will be held today for its citizens overseas, including in Malaysia, comprising some 1.5 million people. - Mkini
