PETALING JAYA: Singapore’s transport ministry today said it is possible for Putrajaya to be granted an extension on matters related to the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project.
In confirming that Putrajaya had requested for a six-month deadline extension on March 27, a spokesperson for the ministry said it was possible to defer the project deadline, “provided it is done within the framework of the RTS Link Bilateral Agreement (BA)”.
It must also be subject to the mutual consent of both countries, the spokesperson said in a statement.
Malaysia, the spokesperson, added, could also request to suspend the RTS Link Project, as it had with the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail Project.
“Alternatively, Malaysia can terminate the existing RTS Link bilateral agreement and request to negotiate a fresh BA with Singapore.”
On April 1, Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook revealed that Putrajaya had requested for an extension to enable the government to examine several issues, including the cost of implementing the project.
A request for an extension will likely further delay the project to connect Bukit Chagar in Johor to Woodlands, Singapore. The link was originally supposed to have been built by 2018.
Singapore had previously said the RTS project “is no longer on track” to commence by Dec 31, 2024 as scheduled, and blamed Putrajaya for the delay. - FMT
