GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow today announced that the proposed three islands reclamation project south of Penang Island has been approved by federal regulators.
In a brief statement, Chow said the project, formally known as the Penang South Reclamation (PSR), has been given the nod by the National Physical Planning Council (MPFN).
He said the MPFN, chaired by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, had given 18 pieces of “advice” to be complied with. He did not say what these were but said he would explain the matter at a press conference tomorrow.
“The Penang government will comply with the advice of the MPFN and relevant agencies as per the sections under the Town and Country Planning Act 1976,” Chow said.
The PSR measures nearly 17 sq km, with islands measuring 9.3, 4.45, and 3.23 sq km to be reclaimed off the coast of Permatang Damar Laut, near Bayan Lepas.
The reclaimed land will belong to the Penang government but will later be auctioned off to the highest bidder to finance the RM46 billion Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP).
The PTMP envisions a series of highways, light rail transit (LRT) lines and other modes of transport to be built in the next 20 to 30 years.
The Penang government has indicated that it would like to start the 19.5km Pan Island Link 1 highway and the Komtar-Bayan Lepas LRT line before the other projects take off.
The PSR will be carried out by SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture between Gamuda Bhd, Penang real estate development firms Loh Phoy Yen Holdings Sdn Bhd and Ideal Property Development Sdn Bhd. - FMT
