Race relations worse under PH, says Tok Mat

SEREMBAN: Barisan Nasional’s Rantau by-election candidate Mohamad Hasan claimed that race relations in the country have become more strained since Pakatan Harapan took over Putrajaya in the May 9 polls.

The former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar, fondly known as Tok Mat, attributed the worsening racial relations to the PH’s inability to govern the country effectively 11 months after it came into power.

This included not having a clear direction, he said.

“For 60 years, we built this country together. The Malays, Chinese, Indians and the people of Sabah and Sarawak lived in harmony and respected each other. Today, it is the opposite.

“And this does not bode well for a multiracial country like Malaysia,” he said at a ceramah in Kampung Ulu Lalang in Rantau last night.

Mohamad said that of late, people seemed to disrespect the law and did as they pleased.

If this was not addressed, the acting Umno president warned, it could lead to discord among the various races and even disunity among adherents of the same faith.

“If the PH administration does not give this serious attention, we will face problems, including a situation where races feel insulted. I am afraid the patience of a particular community would run out.”

Mohamad said it would be difficult for any nation to recover from racial strife.

He claimed that there were those who were trying to create a schism among the races in Rantau by playing up racial issues when campaigning in the by-election.

On Saturday, Mohamad will take on PH’s Dr Streram Sinnasamy and two independents, Malar Rajaram and Mohd Nor Yassin, for the Rantau state seat. - FMT
