Rantau indie Malar unfazed by lack of public donations for her campaign

SEREMBAN: Rantau by-election independent candidate R. Malarvizhi says she will continue to complete the race, although she has yet to receive any donations from the public.
“I am not disappointed, as I did not expect there would be people contributing. I will continue the race, based on my ability and capability. This does not affect my campaign,” the confident former radio host told reporters before a walkabout in Bandar Sri Sendayan Monday (April 8).
“I will also put up my banner, it should be ready by Tuesday (April 9) or the day after,” Malarvizhi, who is also known as Malar, said.
Malar, who is using the tree as her logo in the Rantau by-election, said she will not regret it, even if she does not win the election.
“This will be my first and last time contesting in an election. It is up to the voters whether they want me or not,” she said.
Malar had put her bank account number on her name cards to appeal for public donations when she began campaigning. She was said to be using her own savings to contest.
The 51-year-old declined to reveal how many votes she targets to garner in the by-election.
“I want to win. I have already told the media. The race now is between me and Tok Mat (Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan). The red one (referring to Pakata Harapan’s Dr S. Streram) is out,” she said.
“I look at their banner, they do not have a vision. Doktor Seri, Doktor Rakyat? He is not a leader, he is just a follower. I am a leader,” she said, adding that she wanted to win and take care of Rantau.
Malar also suggested the media ask people in the residential area and kampung why they were afraid when they met the independent candidates.
“They are some who are afraid to come near me. This is just the beginning. You should ask them, go to the taman and kampung. Ask them why they are afraid of independent candidates,” she said.
Rantau polling day on April 13 will see Malar facing off against Barisan candidate Mohamad, Pakatan candidate Dr Streram and independent candidate Mohd Nor Yassin.- Star
