RANTAU POLLS | BN-Umno candidate Mohamad Hasan has been advised to pay more attention to news reports after he questioned why former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak had yet to be arrested or charged over the 1MDB scandal.
Najib has been arrested and charged with 42 counts of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and abuse of power in relation to 1MDB.
His criminal trial for the SRC International Sdn Bhd case began on Wednesday this week.
Speaking to Rantau voters last night, DAP deputy president Gobind Singh Deo said Mohamad should get up to speed with the latest developments.
“I ask that Tok Mat (as Mohamad is widely referred to) opens the newspaper and reads it, or watches TV.
“Or he could go to court and observe the (Najib’s) trial, where witnesses are given the chance to testify.
“Does he not know that we have already charged Najib in court?” the communications and multimedia minister asked at a 400-strong ceramah in Taman Pasir Mas, Pekan Rantau.
Gobind predicted that Najib’s trial would take a considerable amount of time.
“The court case won’t just take a day or two because it is a big case.
“As a lawyer with 20 years of experience, I know this case will take time,” he said.
At a ceramah on Wednesday night, Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan had lamented how the Pakatan Harapan government always talked about 1MDB and lacked direction in steering the country.
"They have no direction. In Parliament, it's always about 1MDB.
"If 1MDB is truly a problem, you charge Najib. You used to say the charge sheets had been prepared, there has just been no arrest. So why has there been no arrest?
"It is not that I want Najib to be arrested, but these are all lies, all slander, pure lies,” said Tok Mat.
He later clarified his comments, saying they were a mere “figure of speech”.
"If you have a really strong case, you just need one charge.
"So, whether they're being dramatic or what, I don't know,” he added.
The April 13 Rantau by-election will see incumbent Mohamad square off with PKR’s Dr S Streram and two independent candidates - homemaker R Malar and retired lecturer Mohd Nor Yassin.
The by-election was triggered by Streram’s successful election appeal against him being barred from entering the nomination centre during the 14th general election for not having an EC pass with him. - Mkini
