RANTAU POLLS | Tabung Haji's record low dividend payout yesterday was the result of a choice between being dishonest or dutiful, said PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
"Some people say 'under Umno I got six percent (dividend) but now its just one percent (sic)'.
"Some think that way, but now we have a choice.
"We can fake our accounts so people are excited, or we can fulfil our promise (to clean up Tabung Haji)," Anwar said at a talk in Rantau today.
Tabung Haji yesterday announced a dividend of 1.25 percent.
In announcing this Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa had blamed poor administration and creative accounting under BN.
On social media, some have taken to blame Tabung Haji's fortunes on DAP.
Anwar said such thinking is wrong.
"They keep saying 'this is because of DAP, its easy. There were no losses before but because of the Chinese there are losses'.
"Such views are not valid," Anwar said.
He echoed Mujahid in saying that BN could pay off dividends by cooking its books.
"That is why during Umno's time there was no losses. They didn't show their accounts, so there's no losses (to show)," he said.
He expressed confidence that Tabung Haji can bounce back in a few years
Meanwhile, Anwar downplayed questions on whether Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng's hints last night that the East Coast Rail Link may be rerouted to include Negeri Sembilan, was in violation of campaign laws.
"Perhaps he was asked (before the ceramah) on what is the new alignment of the ECRL, so he then needed to explain.
"My position is clear we should not campaign using the government. But if I'm asked, for example, what is the government's stance or my response to the Rome Statute, I will give a response including on my private discussion with the prime minister," he said. - Mkini
