RANTAU POLLS | A senior Umno leader today said that candidate Mohamad Hasan's victory in the Rantau by-election last night is a sign that the influence of political Islam is shining in Malaysia.
Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad attributed the win to the close cooperation between Umno and PAS.
"The cooperation between BN and PAS, that has grown stronger day by day, is a clear signal to supporters of both parties to remain committed to carrying out this political synergy," she said in a statement last night.
Mohamad, the acting Umno president, beat Pakatan Harapan's Dr S Streram and two other independents in yesterday's polls.
The former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar defended the state seat for a fourth term with a majority of 4,510 votes.
Noraini said BN's third by-election victory is also evidence of cooperation of the Umno machinery, as well as with other component or friendly parties, including IPF, Makkal Sakti and Kimma.

She also lauded Rantau voters for being brave enough to state a stand on alleged failures by the Harapan government, particularly in addressing economic and cost of living issues.
"BN's victory also proves that the candidate was accepted by all segments of voters, including Chinese and Indians, who contributed to the victory," she added.

Meanwhile, Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin said Mohamad's win is proof that the people of Rantau is grateful to the former menteri besar for his past contributions.
On a larger scale, he said the latest development also provided a bigger picture on how BN's cooperation with PAS had naturally grown, and allegedly sparking concern among Harapan parties, including DAP.
"It is clear how good deeds will always be remembered by the people, without any need for force or threats (using) slander and dirty personal attacks.
"It appears the people want to continue issuing a stern signal to the government.
"No matter what excuse is used to cover up their policy weaknesses and unfavourable decisions, the people, in the end, can think maturely and make a fair assessment of Harapan's failures," he said.
Khaled added that with Mohamad's victory, the opposition must continue to work hard and help the people who have been disappointed by the Harapan government.
In an immediate response to Harapan's defeat, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim yesterday said the ruling coalition must take it as a reminder to focus on the people's plight. - Mkini
