Govt affairs first, Azmin hints skipping PKR meeting tomorrow

Mohamed Azmin Ali’s meeting with a group of Umno MPs in Putrajaya has generated intense speculation.
KUALA LUMPUR: PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali today hinted that he might again skip his party’s political bureau meeting tomorrow, after party president Anwar Ibrahim urged him to explain a private dinner function he hosted for a select group of MPs including from Barisan Nasional (BN) last night.
When asked, Azmin, whose continued absence from PKR meetings has been criticised by Anwar, said he would give priority to government matters over party affairs.
“As a new government, we must introduce Pakatan Harapan, be it among the ‘rakyat’ or overseas,” the economic affairs minister told reporters in Parliament today.
Yesterday, FMT reported that at least two dozen MPs including Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein, who last month denied working to form a “back-door” government without key PH partners, had attended a meeting at Azmin’s official residence in Putrajaya.
It was speculated that Azmin was attempting to thwart any move to pressure Dr Mahathir Mohamad from quitting following PH’s defeat in Tanjung Piai on Saturday.
In his response, Anwar said he hoped his deputy would attend the party’s political bureau meeting tomorrow to explain what transpired last night.
Azmin today said his meeting with MPs was part of his engagement with the business community as well as MPs to get feedback on government policies.
“There was nothing extraordinary that needed to be publicised,” he said.
“That’s the job of a minister, I have to meet people.” - FMT
