High Court rejects Gerakan's application to challenge Khat issue

Penang High Court today rejected Gerakan's application to challenge four federal government defendants over the controversial teaching of Khat (Jawi) in schools.
Judicial commissioner Amarjeet Singh rejected the application, ruling that Jawi is part of the Malay language, which is the official language of Malaysia.
"The court cannot intervene in policy matters unless the matter is unconstitutional," Amarjeet said when reading out his decision.
Also present in court today was Gerakan president Dominic Lau and deputy president Oh Tong Keong.

Gerakan had filed the application against the Pakatan Harapan federal government, Ministry of Education (MOE), its minister Maszlee Malik and deputy Teo Nie Ching over the Khat issue on September 18.
When contacted, Oh, who is also Penang Gerakan chairperson said the party would be consulting its lawyers before deciding whether to appeal the case.
Gerakan is represented by secretary-general Mah Kah Keong.
In August, Chinese educationist groups and parents slammed the Harapan government for the announcement of khat (Jawi calligraphy) for Year 4 vernacular school pupils next year.
After much flak, the MOE decided that the Jawi script lesson would only be implemented with the agreement of parent-teacher associations and other parents of pupils.
But the criticisms continue as educationist groups were not happy that the school boards were not listed as decision-makers in the implementation of Jawi script lesson. - Mkini
