Keeping promises during by-election is not corruption, minister says

Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Salahuddin Ayub.
KUALA LUMPUR: Federal minister Salahuddin Ayub today denied that giving cash handouts to fishermen in Tanjung Piai constitutes a breach of election laws, saying promises to the people can be fulfilled at any time.
He said the aid in question was promised by former Tanjung Piai MP Mohamed Farid Md Rafik, whose death on Sept 21 triggered the by-election on Nov 16.
“As a minister, if I go to Tanjung Piai and tell them to vote for Pakatan Harapan (PH), that is corruption. But as a minister, I am fulfilling what was promised by Farid.
“It can be given at any time. If it benefits the fishermen, it benefits the people,” he said.
e was replying to Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian), who had asked if it was an election offence to give cash handouts to the fishermen during the campaign period.
It was reported that special assistance of RM1,000 would be given to 1,513 fishermen in Johor South who have been affected by development in the area.
Johor Menteri Besar Sahruddin Jamal said this would involve an allocation of RM1.513 million from the Johor Fishermen Development Fund.
Salahuddin said assistance should be given when it is due. He gave the example of the jetty in Tanjung Piai, saying if it needs repair, “why wait?” - FMT
