'MCA 'eats' with PAS, but doesn't share the same bed, said the BN candidate for the Tanjung Piai by-election Wee Jeck Seng.
When met at a press conference during his election campaign in Pontian town today, Wee was initially reluctant to give a straight answer on whether MCA was a member of PAS-Umno's Muafakat Nasional.
"The mission of Muafakat Nasional, we have had a main ceramah, and for the past five to 10 years we have already been practising muafakat (cooperation) in the villages, every day.
"We sit together at a table, listen to froises, hold programmes to help. That is our responsibility as elected representatives," Wee said.
Pressed again on whether MCA is a member of Muafakat Nasional, he replied: "No... I have said that all this while we have practised (cooperation), what is important is harmony, not this issue.
"What is important is harmony. We eat together, drink together, we just don't sleep together," he said with a laugh.
MCA has not made clear whether it is a member of Muafakat Nasional.
'Muafakat Nasional a form of opposition solidarity'
In a BN-PAS ceramah last Wednesday, MCA president Wee Ka Siong had in his opening statement referred to Muafakat Nasional as a form of opposition solidarity.
Last night, at a Muafakat Nasional Youth event, MCA Youth chief Nicole Wong said the concept of Muafakat Nasional is for the opposition to work together towards something better.
Likewise, MIC has also not stated its stance on Muafakat Nasional. MIC Youth chief R Thinalan was present at last night's event.
When met at Parliament, MIC deputy president M Saravanan said Muafakat Nasional was inclusive of the two non-Malay BN parties.
However, Saravanan didn't specifically say if the two were members of the Umno-PAS pact.
"(It is inclusive of) all races. All parties within BN and all races," he told Malaysiakini, citing how MCA was given another go at the Tanjung Piai seat despite Umno and PAS being on a stronger footing. - Mkini
