Wendy rubbishes suggestion Gerakan contesting Tg Piai to split Chinese votes

PONTIAN: Gerakan candidate Wendy Subramaniam has dismissed talk that the party's involvement in the Tanjung Piai by-election here was to split the Chinese votes.
She said that the party's decision to join the six-cornered fight here was to offer the people a "third force" to represent them in Parliament.
"We had announced that we would be contesting even before we knew that MCA would be contesting.
"We were also the second party to announce our candidate, and that was also before knowing that Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng would be Barisan Nasional's candidate," she said when met after having a K-Pop exercise session with the local here on Thursday (Nov 7).
She added that having a third force in Parliament would allow the people here to have their voices heard.
The Tanjung Piai polls on Nov 16 will be a six-cornered fight between Pakatan Harapan’s Karmaine Sardini, Barisan’s Wee, Gerakan’s Wendy, Berjasa’s Dr Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz and independents Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar and Dr Ang Chuan Lock.
The by-election was called following the death of its incumbent, 42-year-old Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik on Sept 21.
In GE14, Dr Farid won the seat with a slim 524-vote majority against Wee and PAS candidate Nordin Othman. -Star
