SHAH ALAM: Growing-up in a multiracial and multireligious community in Teluk Intan taught Farriz Abd Rahman the importance of respecting different cultures and practices.
“That is how my parents raised me and that is how I raise my four children,” said Farriz who manages the Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (Pasti) Little Imtiyaz near here.
When the pre-school and daycare centre started operations last year, Farriz made it a point to inculcate the same values among the pupils.
“We take them to visit our neighbours of different faiths during the festive season bearing gifts,” said Farriz when met at the centre yesterday.

With the Chinese New Year, Farriz as well as the centre’s treasurer Muhamad Amin Yahya took a group of daycare pupils to visit
their Chinese neighbours to wish them Gong Xi Fa Cai, with the children bearing gifts of cakes and soft drinks.
“We also do this to ensure that the children learn to assimilate and live in a multiracial and multicultural society,” said Farriz.
Given that the centre operates based on Islamic principles, said Farriz, the move was also in tandem with cultivating the children in becoming good Muslims.
According to him, the parents were very supportive of the move and were happy that their children were being taught to live in a multiracial setting and respect other cultures.
He said some of the parents shared the video of their children greeting the Chinese neighbours on social media.
“We did it last year as well but it was a low-key event.
“But this year, some parents, who were happy that their children were being taught to share and care, shared the video which attracted a lot of attention,’’ said Farriz.
The children too, he said, enjoyed the gesture and were ever ready
to wish and greet their neighbours.
One of the centre’s immediate neighbours, Dr Robert Saw, said he was touched by the gesture.
“The people operating the centre are very nice and it is good that they are encouraging the children to interact closely with other races,’’ he added.
Another Chinese family in the neighbourhood reciprocated by giving the children, aged between four and six, ang pows. - Star
