CORONAVIRUS | Sarawak DAP has directed all of its members and elected representatives who had close contact with Sarikei MP Wong Ling Biu in the last 14 days to observe self-quarantine.
Its chairperson Chong Chieng Jen (above), in a statement, said this is in compliance with the standard operating procedure set by the Health Ministry to contain the spread of the Covid-19 after Wong was reportedly tested positive.
"Most of us had last close contact with Wong on March 1, the day when Muhyiddin (Yassin) was sworn in as the prime minister and thus we have passed the 14-day period.
"Though both Kelvin Yee and I had no fever, cough or any symptom of the virus infection, but due to the nature of our work, we have had Covid-19 tests done by the Sarawak General Hospital this morning," said the Stampin MP.
"The results should be out by tomorrow. Meanwhile, we pray for the speedy recovery of Wong Ling Biu," he added.
Sources told Malaysiakini yesterday that Wong (photo) had tested positive for Covid-19 several days after he was admitted to Sibu Hospital upon return from Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the administration of Universiti Malaya has confirmed one positive Covid-19 case involving an invited speaker for a programme held at its main campus in Petaling Jaya.
"The university views the matter with utmost priority and immediately embarks on relevant measures such as the closure of the said venue for disinfection as advised by Pusat Kesihatan Daerah Lembah Pantai in making sure preventive measures in accordance to proper procedures and guidelines," it said in a statement to Malaysiakini.
UM said the function was hosted on Feb 28 and the speaker was tested positive on March 6.
It further said that the venue was temporarily closed and has since been disinfected.
