CIMB CEO is new finance minister, FT mufti to be in charge of religion

Malaysiakini
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today announced that he will appoint a non-politician as the new finance minister.
Unveiling his cabinet today, Muhyiddin revealed that he plans to appoint CIMB Group chief executive officer Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz (above) as a senator, after which he will take up the position of finance minister.
"We will appoint the CIMB CEO as a senator, he is a great person," said Muhyiddin.
Tengku Zafrul, 46, has had 24 years of experience in the financial industry.
He will be assisted by two deputy finance ministers, namely Umno's Kudat MP Abdul Rahim Bakri and Paya Besar MP Mohd Shahar Abdullah.
Tengku Zafrul, in a statement, thanked Muhyiddin for giving him an opportunity to serve the country.
"I am humbled by this enormous responsibility especially at a time when the country is facing unprecedented economic challenges.
"I undertake to give my best to the nation and am looking forward to serve with all the relevant stakeholders in ensuring we remain steadfast and in the spirit of inclusivity, work together to realize our collective aspirations," he said.
Tengku Zafrul is not the only outsider Muhyiddin is co-opting into his Perikatan Nasional cabinet line-up.
Muhyiddin said the Federal Territories mufti Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri (photo) will be brought into the government as a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of religious affairs.
Zulkifli, too, is expected to be appointed as a senator to allow him to take up the position.
The 51-year-old, who has served as the Federal Territories mufti since 2014, is seen as a moderate religious figure.
His deputy will be PAS' Pengkalan Chepa MP Ahmad Marzuk Shaary.
Tengku Zafrul and Zulkifli are the only two of six senators who will be appointed in order to take up positions in the government.
However, they will be the only two non-politicians.
The other four to be appointed as senators are MCA vice-president Lim Ban Hong, MCA deputy president Mah Hang Soon, BN executive secretary Dr Ahmad Masrizal Muhammad and Bersatu's Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who was formerly Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman's special officer.
Lim will take up the position of deputy international trade and industry minister, while Mah will be the deputy education minister I.
Meanwhile, Masrizal will be the deputy environment minister and Fayhsal the deputy youth and sports minister.
