'Give us a chance', Muhyiddin says when asked about snap polls

Malaysiakini

Newly minted Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today ruled out that the Perikatan Nasional government would call a snap election, saying that they have a long way to go.
"Come on, give us a chance lah. There's a long way to go," he said at a press conference after chairing his first cabinet meeting in Putrajaya this morning.
The premier was answering a question on whether there would be a snap election soon, or if the government plans to call for an early general election.
Muhyiddin added that the new administration wants to prove their mettle first before calling for a poll.
"But of course it is important, we will know what we need to do to ensure that we do not last only for the next few years.
"Hopefully, if we do well, and the public believes this government is the government that can help them, then we will plan properly for the next election.
"But it is a bit too early to say that," he said.
During the political turmoil last month which saw Pakatan Harapan government fell after governing for barely two years, Umno and PAS had called for the mandate to be returned to the rakyat through a snap election.
The two parties had since joined with the Muhyiddin-led faction in Bersatu to form a majority coalition together with several other parties including Sarawak's GPS, MCA and MIC.
However, Pakatan Harapan remaining members, namely PKR, DAP and Amanah, plus a Bersatu faction loyal to its chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, had challenged Muhyiddin's claim of having the majority in parliament to form the new government. - Mkini
