The collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government was a result of the actions of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, claimed ex-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“The real conspirator is Najib. When he lost (the GE14 elections) he got the idea that if he pushes for a Malay-Muslim government, then he will get more Malay support and he will win.
"That's why he tried so hard but his approach failed and eventually we finally won,” Mahathir told Malay-language daily Sinar Harian in an interview.
“Nevertheless, Najib and PAS still emphasised the Malay-Muslim narrative and tried to find support from Bersatu to establish an Islamic government and kept playing up to the Malays that DAP must be regarded as 'bad'."
The ex-premier said that those in the Harapan government who wanted to get rid of DAP were willing to work with Umno.
“This is how those who lost are now seen as winners. Why would I have to commit a conspiracy when I am already prime minister?” asked Mahathir.
He added that Najib was desperate to regain power as soon as possible as the outcome of his corruption trials would be announced and he could be sentenced to jail.
“So that was their conspiracy, how they wanted to become a government after losing by convincing Bersatu members to support them and to leave Pakatan Harapan. Now they have won,” he said.
Mahathir (above) also hoped Muhyiddin would continue with the policies he had made during his term as premier.
“I ask the cabinet not to turn away from the good policies we have set. Take for example the 'Shared Prosperity Vision 2030'.
“That is a good policy and the person who created the policy is also in the cabinet. Don't drop it "he said, in reference to Azmin Ali, who was the economic affairs minister in Mahathir’s administration. - Mkini
