Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman said the priority should be on helping some 13,000 Malaysia Airlines staff who have been asked to go on unpaid leave instead of trying to push for their attires to be syariah-compliant.
He said this in response to Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff's statement that she will be meeting with Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, who is in charge of religious affairs, to push for female Muslim flight attendants to cover their aurat.
"There are 13,000 MAS staff having to take unpaid leave due to the coronavirus epidemic. This is without counting other airlines.
"YB, please help them overcome this problem first. Many of them are youths," said Syed Saddiq, who was the youth and sports minister under the previous Pakatan Harapan government.
Airlines have been severely hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Thousands of flights have been cancelled as countries lockdown cities to contain the virus.
The pandemic claimed its first aviation victim early this month following the collapse of UK-based Airline Flybe, putting 2,000 jobs at risk.
To date, 141,474 people have been infected across the globe with 5,399 deaths.
Of this, 80,824 cases and 3,189 deaths were from China.
However, China appears to have brought the virus under control after more than two-months of draconian measures but it is now aggressively spreading to other parts of the globe.
Italy (17,660 cases), Iran (11,364), South Korea (8,086) as well as several European countries are struggling to contain the virus.
