The Kuala Lumpur High Court has vacated today’s hearing of the 1MDB-linked contempt application against former Umno supreme council member Lokman Noor Adam, following the Court of Appeal ordering a stay on proceedings.
Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah postponed the hearing to April 17 pending disposal of Lokman’s (above) related appeal at the Court of Appeal.
On March 5, it was reported that a three-member Court of Appeal bench allowed Lokman’s application to stay the contempt proceedings pending disposal of his appeal to quash the leave granted by the High Court for the attorney-general (AG) to proceed with contempt proceedings against him.
As Lokman looked on during proceedings, his counsel Noor Farhah Mustaffa informed Sequerah about the Court of Appeal’s stay order, and applied for today’s hearing be postponed to another date.
“The Court of Appeal allowed (Lokman’s application for) stay of proceedings (on the contempt proceedings at the High Court).
“I pray for this court to fix another hearing date (for the contempt proceedings). The Court of Appeal fixed March 31 to hear (Lokman’s) appeal,” the lawyer said.
Sequerah then vacated today’s hearing and set April 17 in the afternoon for hearing of the contempt application against Lokman, pending disposal of the related appeal at the Court of Appeal.
On Oct 22 last year, the High Court granted leave to the AG to initiate committal proceedings against Lokman for having allegedly intimidated a key witness in former premier Najib Abdul Razak’s RM2.28 billion 1MDB trial, on two occasions on Sept 25 last year.
The witness is Amhari Efendi Nazaruddin (above), a former special officer to Najib.
It was alleged that on Sept 25, Lokman in a video interview, uttered words constituting an expressed or implied threat against Amhari.
It was also alleged that on the same day, Lokman lodged a police report against Amhari, who was the eighth prosecution witness, in relation to his testimony in Najib’s ongoing 1MDB trial.
On Jan 14 this year, the High Court dismissed Lokman’s bid to quash the leave granted to the AG to commence committal proceedings against him. He then appealed to the Court of Appeal. - Mkini
