CORONAVIRUS | Defence Ministry is ready to assist health authorities in facing a possible increase in Covid-19 cases in the country, said its minister Ismail Sabri.
Addressing a press conference this morning, Ismail (above) said the ministry has also set up a special committee to tackle the virus threat in the Armed Forces.
There has been no military personnel infected by the new coronavirus as of yet, he added.
"So far, none of our personnel have been found positive (with Covid-19).
"We have formed a special committee to address the threat of Covid-19, and we are always ready to cooperate with the Health Ministry upon request," he said.
According to Ismail, there will be a meeting by a federal level committee on Covid-19 later today, to be chaired by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said the premier is expected to roll out orders on how to address the problem, and this might include roping in the Defence Ministry.
"I was invited to attend the meeting by the Covid-19 (high level) committee that will be chaired by the PM this evening. Maybe there will be orders to Mindef by the PM then."
Asked on whether there is any plan to bring home Malaysians who are in Italy, which is the second worst-hit country after China, Ismail said such a decision would be made by the government.
However, he stressed, the ministry is ready to mobilise its assets if needed to bring back Malaysians there.
On precautionary measures for soldiers, Ismail told reporters that the ministry is providing face masks and hand sanitisers for prevention.
The items are also made available for personnel who are on duty guarding the borders and also those sent for overseas peace missions.
Ismail said any decision to limit outdoor activities will depend on the Health Ministry's advice. - Mkini
