Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak said there are limitations to Umno's support for the new Perikatan Nasional government.
He said this amid complaints that Umno was under-represented in the new government.
"Many do not understand that the PN government is not a Muafakat Nasional or BN government.
"Therefore, our support for the PN government has limits.
"That is why the Umno president, deputy president and Umno Youth chief are not part of today's cabinet.
"We will defend the PN government until the 15th general election," he said in a Facebook post.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had sought to keep leaders with ongoing corruption cases, including Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, out of the government.
However, other senior Umno leaders such as deputy president Mohamed Hassan and Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki were also not included.
There were also complaints from within Umno that many important ministries were kept out of its hands.
Muhyiddin's party, Bersatu, has the most cabinet positions and also controls key ministries despite having fewer MPs than Umno.
