Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Abdul Hamid Bador has denied a claim that former finance minister Lim Guan Eng’s son was arrested in Singapore.
“Not true,” the IGP told Malaysiakini when asked about the alleged report concerning the DAP secretary-general’s son.
Lim's lawyer RSN Rayer, who is also the Jelutong MP, when contacted, also denied the claim.
"It's fake," he told Malaysiakini.
Chinese-language newspaper Nanyang Siang Pau had earlier reported that the child of a “senior Pakatan Harapan leader” had allegedly been nabbed after he attempted to bring in RM2 million into Singapore without proper verification.
Controversial blog Malaysia Today later quoted the Nanyang article and alleged that the young man involved was Lim’s son.
MP: Lim’s family to sue
According to DAP lawmaker Steven Sim, Lim will be taking legal action against those making the allegation.
“The Lim family will sue those who spread such slander,” he said in a statement, adding that he hoped the police would also take action.
Malaysiakini has reached out to Rayer for confirmation.
The Bukit Mertajam MP branded the allegation as a tactic to distract the public from Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) shortcomings.
“As the PN government is unable to handle the second wave of Covid-19 and as the economy worsens, and the people lose confidence in this government that is without a mandate, Umno and friends in Muafakat Nasional and BN will start to spread slander, wild allegations and misinformation.
“Harapan leaders, especially those in DAP will be the victims of their dirty political tactics. The objective of these tactics is clear - it is to shift the people’s understanding to the shortcomings and instability of this government,” Sim said. - Mkini
