Sarawak hopes to achieve zero new Covid cases during MCO period - CM

Malaysiakini

The Sarawak state government hopes to achieve lesser or zero new Covid-19 positive cases by end of the month, according to state Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg.
He said this in light of the dropping of new Covid-19 cases in the state from 10 on March 21 to four today.
This showed that the Covid-19 situation in the state has stabilised, he told a press conference after chairing a Sarawak-level National Security Council meeting.
With the encouraging trend, Abang Johari (above) said the state government is hopeful that Sarawak can achieve zero new cases on the 14th day of the implementation of the movement control order (MCO).
"If we abide strictly to the MCO, there is a good possibility that we can contain Covid-19 in view that Sarawak is separated from the peninsula where the South China Sea gives us an advantage to stop the chain of the infection," he said.
"There is a possibility that after 14 days we are going to come down. It is our objective to have zero (new cases).
"If not [...] on the 16th to 17th day, we (can) come to zero (new cases)," he said.
The chief minister urged the Sarawakians to observe the extension of MCO to April 14.
When asked why the move was necessary when the Sarawak situation has improved, he merely answered: "Why we continue? We just abide by the decision of the prime minister."
According to him, the state government's instruction remained that all markets, supermarkets, coffee shops and restaurants in Sarawak are only open from 7am to 7pm.
Putrajaya implemented the MCO from March 18 to 31 in a bid to contain the sharp increase in Covid-19 cases in the country via social distancing.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin announced yesterday that MCO would be extended to April 14.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari revealed that the state government was able to identify the source of infection in the Covid-19 deaths of a pastor and three family members.
He said these were imported cases.
