YOURSAY | ‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results.’
Quigonbond: Wise choice. Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is not helpful.
He precipitated the Pakatan Harapan government's fall by facilitating former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali’s team, treating the Buku Harapan like toilet paper, and having no intention to let PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim succeed him.
The real challenge is to bring the message to the electorate that this is treachery of the highest degree that cannot go unpunished. The Malay masses must also be persuaded that a Malay supermajority government means nothing of importance except help certain parties secure power.
It's also time to invite former PKR leader Rafizi Ramli back into the fold. More progressive Malays who can connect with rural folks also need to join Harapan parties.
JusticeNow: Absolutely, this is the right direction. Mahathir had hoped to crown his glory with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit, now he will just be another "apek" (old man).
Mahathir could have gone down in history as a hero but now he will end up as the greatest "loser" in Malaysian political history. If he had passed the baton, I am sure Anwar and Harapan would put up monuments to remember him but self-interest had got the better of him.
Please do not propose him as prime minister again.
Anonymous_1371547149: Former deputy prime minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, you are too polite. The greatest betrayal was by Mahathir who did everything he could to stop the reforms as promised by Harapan.
Unfortunately, the other parties in Harapan had to stomach it in order to present a united front, knowing how fragile the coalition was. They were hoping that when the handover happened, Harapan could then go full steam ahead with fulfilling the manifesto.
Obviously, Mahathir put paid to that. Now that he is out, he is still demonising Anwar. For this alone, many will stand with Anwar.
Drngsc: Sorry Wan Azizah, this time you are wrong. We want Anwar to go into retirement, just like Mahathir.
Anwar was weak during the events of Feb 21. He betrayed his supporters at the Harapan presidential council (by agreeing to let Mahathir decide on a transition date after Apec). All the fiasco of the last week of February could have easily been avoided.
He should also have gotten rid of Azmin about six months ago. Instead, he allowed Azmin to remain, fester and gain support.
We want a total change. All these leaders now have to go. When snap elections come, we want your younger leaders. Even if they have less experience, they have less baggage.
Aje Wan: Anwar shouldn’t be obsessed with being PM. One should be obsessed with reaching out and being with the rakyat. Be obsessed in fighting for our basic human rights, the poor, the minority, the needy, the Orang Asal and the marginalised. Be selfless.
Will we ever have such a politician?
Asking The Hard Questions: Albert Einstein says, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results."
Sure, go ahead to name Anwar as the PM... again. In fact, do so for the next 20 years. It won't matter because if Anwar is their PM candidate, Harapan will not win and become the government, ever.
Harapan will just continue to "harap" (hope) and Anwar will break humankind’s record as the "longest-serving prime minister in waiting in the entire universe".
The fact is Anwar does not have majority support, even though his supporters want to believe so. My advice to Wan Azizah and Harapan is to ditch Anwar. He is toxic to the coalition.
Anonymous_1543386425: If you think Anwar is going to lead Malaysia if Harapan gains power, then Wan Azizah, both you and Anwar, are dreaming. Without Mahathir, there is no way Anwar can get 112 members of parliament (MPs) to support him.
Anwar and you are both up to the same mantra again. Obviously, Anwar did not learn his lesson that he does not have the support of 112 MPs.
Mahathir would just leave things as they are and let Anwar continue his fight and see whether he has the support. If Anwar persists with his nonsense then it is likely that more Harapan MPs will defect as Anwar has no hope to be PM.
His insistence would strengthen Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and the May parliamentary sitting would give Muhyiddin a victory in a vote of confidence.
Huangpo: Yes, Anwar is history. Let this aspiration be the past and gracefully step aside. The rakyat are tired and disillusioned about their leaders.
Restructure and change. This time let the younger ones, especially the women, to take charge or else there is not an iota of a chance to win. Now is not the time to indulge in false hope.
Sulaiman Che Long: Go ahead and bite the bullet. Let the great-grandpa go. Mahathir has demonstrated with no uncertainty he cannot be trusted and the consensus is he is unpredictable.
Move on. There are still plenty of people supporting Harapan.
Anonymous_1371550919: That is the right move. So be it if you lose the elections but at least you have your principles and dignity intact.
It's time to sever ties with the ungrateful Mahathir and any further consideration shall be equal terms. It is Mahathir who failed to hold his part of the bargain and was never sincere in the first place.
PSH: In Malaysia, so far, there are no candidates suitable to be PM. The Western world allows any citizen to be president/prime minister. Malaysia only allows a Malay to be the PM.
After 60 years, Malaysia is still very much a race-focused nation. No wonder Malaysia is still developing and developing. Any chance to be the first world nation? No way.
Sarawak4Malaysian: It’s because we identify ourselves as our own race first and Malaysian second. This is a result of brainwashing for over 60 years.
And the sad thing is we played along, even teaching our children about the racial differences among their little friends. We can do our small part at least.
But not much will change as long as the political parties are race-based. Can MIC/MCA disband and form a multiracial party? Take the first bold step and invite all the progressive bumiputeras.
Hopefully, one day we will see the light of the day. - Mkini
