KUCHING: The 12th Sarawak state election will be held in accordance with the Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedures (SOP), beginning with the nomination process tomorrow.

Based on the SOP released by the Election Commission, attendance is limited to 50 per cent of the premises' capacity and a one-metre social distancing needs to be observed during the process.

Only candidates, proposers and seconders are allowed to enter the nomination centres.

Candidates are also not allowed to walk in a parade with their supporters or hold any group activities.

For nomination centres that do not have enough space, candidates and proposers are required to wait outside after submitting their nomination forms, to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission.

Candidates and proposers and seconders who have symptoms are not allowed to enter the nomination centre and they will be separated at a special tent set up at the nomination centres.

The assistant returning officers in full personal protective equipment (PPE) will be stationed at the tent to assist the candidates until they complete the nomination process.

The assistant returning officers will take photos of the candidates' details and nomination form and send them to the returning officer.

Meanwhile, all candidates, proposers and seconders who have symptoms are required to undergo Rapid Test Kit-Antigen (RTK-Antigen) Covid-19 self-test, monitored by officers from the Health Ministry.

Those who test negative for the Covid-19 can proceed to enter the nomination centre with double masking while confirmed cases will be referred to the health officers for further action.

The Election Commission (EC) has set the voting date for the Sarawak state polls on Dec 18 while the nomination of candidates is on Dec 6 and early voting is on Dec 14.

The election is being held following the lifting of the emergency proclamation declared in Sarawak on Nov 3, which paves the way for the 12th Sarawak election to be held.

Sarawak has 82 state constituencies, with a total of 1,252,014 registered voters, consisting 1,228,858 normal voters, 12,585 soldiers and spouses, 10,458 policemen and 113 individuals who were currently abroad. - NST
